Wren Hollow Cabin

A one-room cabin on eleven acres of hayfield and hardwood, an hour and a half northeast of Burlington.

Booked here, directly with us. There is no platform in between and no commission on the nightly rate.

The house

One room, and a ladder

Downstairs is a single room — kitchen at one end, woodstove at the other, and a long table in between that we built out of the barn boards. Two bedrooms off the back, and a loft up the ladder for whoever loses the coin toss.

There is no television. There is a shelf of paperbacks left behind by fifteen years of guests, a radio that reliably finds two stations, and a porch that faces west.

We live twenty minutes up the road. If the power goes out — and in February it sometimes does — there is a lamp and a box of matches in the drawer under the sink, and we are already on our way.

The year here

What the land does

Written by the owner, not collected from anywhere. It is the part of a stay that a photograph cannot carry.

01

Spring

The brook behind the woodshed runs loud enough to hear from the porch. Blackflies arrive in late May and are gone by the third week of June.

02

Summer

Light until nine. The swimming hole ten minutes downstream stays cold all season and is usually empty on a weekday.

03

Autumn

The ridge turns in the first week of October and holds for about ten days. Woodstove weather starts at roughly the same time.

04

Winter

Snow stays from December. The lane is plowed, but the last few hundred feet is snowshoe or ski — we leave both by the door.

Nearby

Three places we actually go

The bakery in the village

6 min drive

Bread and coffee from seven. It closes at two, so it is a morning plan and not an afternoon one.

Ridge trail, north trailhead

14 min drive

The round trip to the lookout takes us about three hours at an unhurried pace. Wet underfoot until June.

General store at the crossroads

9 min drive

Firewood, milk, fishing licenses. The card machine works when the line is up, so we keep cash in the drawer by the door.

After the stay

What guests wrote

Reviews are collected after checkout from guests who booked and stayed on this site.

Example review

“We came for three nights in October and stayed five. The ridge was exactly as described, which is not something you can say about most listings.”

M. Tremblay · October 2025
Example review

“Booking direct was straightforward and the owner answered a question about the woodstove the same evening. The lane really is a snowshoe in winter — they say so up front, which we appreciated.”

R. Osei · February 2026

Come when the ridge turns.
